José Guilherme Camargo de Souza - 2016 EAMT Best Thesis Awardee

Seven PhD theses were received as candidates for the 2016 edition of the EAMT Best Thesis Award, and all seven were eligible. A panel of EAMT members (Khalil Sima'an, Ondrej Bojar, Mikel L. Forcada and Lucia Specia, EAMT secretary) was assembled to review the theses. The panel carefully considered how challenging the problem tackled in each thesis was, how relevant the results are for machine translation as a field, and what the strength of its impact in terms of scientific publications was. 2016 was a good year for PhD theses in MT, which made it very hard to select a winner. The panel has decided to grant the 2016 edition of the EAMT Best Thesis Award to José Guilherme Camargo de Souza's thesis "Adaptive Quality Estimation for Machine Translation and Automatic Speech Recognition" (University of Trento and FBK, supervised by Matteo Negri, Marco Turchi and Marcello Federico).

The awardee will receive a prize of €500, together with a suitably-inscribed certificate. In addition, Dr. Camargo de Souza has been invited to present a summary of his thesis at the Annual Conference of the EAMT ( which will take place in Prague, May 29-31, 2017. In order to facilitate this, the EAMT will waive the winner's registration costs, and will make available a travel bursary of €200.
